OWN IT!

My good friend Carly who I never see (although you would never know it from the number of times I blog about her) told me this week that she thinks I should blog more. I laughed. But then I felt pretty serious because, after all, if the world wants more musings from Sarah Timms than Sarah Timms musings they should have!

I feel like I have grown-up a lot in the last year. It's horrible to say, but it's true. I mean, I still have a Lagoon season passport (and am not 15) and still evaluated my dress for church on the radius of the spinning (and it was HUGE), but overall, I feel so much more... adult (for lack of a better word) than I have in the past. And with all those changes and perspective that I have with my new-found "I might be grown-up one day" attitude, I have an issue to rant... uhhh... blog about. And I have 2 words for you: OWN IT.

If you have kissed three girls in as many weeks, you do NOT only kiss girls you date, you kiss who you feel like it -- own it.

If you "never drink" but find yourself with more-than-one coctail more-than-once a month, you probably drink sometimes -- own it.

If you "love the outdoors" but refuse to camp, you probably don't "love" the outdoors as much as you say you do -- own it.

If you have "broken-up with your boyfriend" but still call him everyday or makeout with him on a regular basis, you aren't really "out of a relationship" -- own it.

If you drink more than 64 ounces of Diet Coke in a day, you are probably an addict. Own IT!

If you are addicted to television shows, do not walk around telling people you don't watch TV ever -- just own-up to liking some TV!

If you "don't believe in fairies" but still clap until your little hands bleed when Tinkerbell dies, you probably DO believe in faries -- own it.

I've honestly decided I don't care what people do - if you're a man-whore, or a flirt, or a lush. A pimp, an addict, a child-like dreamer or a grandma-sleeper, I am SO DOWN with all of it... just as long as you admit it. Just say "yes, I understand that I go to sleep at 8 pm, which means I have the same awake-hours as a seventy-year-old." In that case, I will support you in your quest to sleep during the night and will plan dinner reservations at 5:30 instead of 7:30.

If we all own our issues, than suddenly we can change them. And I say, then we can be motivated to change them. You can look at yourself and say "hey, this is part of me. Perhaps not my favorite part, but this is who I am." And now that you own that part of who you are, you can change it (assuming you want to change it).

This post/rant goes for me too. Here's to owning our issues and, like Hurley, looking death straight in the face and saying "whatever, man."

Honest to Blog

Today I received a bronze medal in Curling from the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Games. Did I mention in curling? because that is the best part. It's times like this it pays to have office parties with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau. Because when all the random stuff doesn't get used, it goes to one of their offices. Other fabulous prizes included Olympic Pins (that you can put your picture in), tickets to the arts festival, bobbleheads and (best) A VHS of Cool Runnings - signed by the Jamaican Bobsled Team. AWESOME!

It's amazing - I work longer hours, often on nights and weekends, and I am paid substantially less than my old position- but I am so much happier. The happiness levels of Sarah Timms have risen with a new sense of purpose and feeling trusted and respected in my position. So let this be a lesson to us all how much job satisfaction is worth in our search to pay the bills.

Also I have moved into a new house. It is pretty fabulous. Increasing the fabulousness is the bout of new people in my life. NEW new people. And OLD new people who have re-appeared in my life. People like Jonny McBride, longest-running friend. I LOVE I LOVE I LOVE meeting people, I love developing new friendships and that feeling of making a connection with another person in this world. What is infinitely more awesome, I think... is having people who already know you. They KNOW horrible and embarrassing things about your life (possibly because they were there... or because they read your journal), and they love you even more for it. In the paraphrased words of that Gay-husband Sanford: "I loved her when she wore Candies and even then she was fabulous." Jonny knew me when I wore a cream-colored sailor outfit for my school picture... and he thought I was fabulous then. It's good to know some people have already seen the bottom you can hit :)

Today (and maybe just for today...) I love my life. I like my job, and I LOVE my friends. I'm pretty awesome.

In my own little corner, In my own little chair

This weekend I went to a new ward. This is always an interesting adventure - you just never know what you're going to get. And, as I was sitting on the second-to-back row, I glanced over my left shoulder to see none other than my ex-boyfriend Dallas Erekson sitting with an incredibly stunning Allison Shields on the bench just inside the door. (aside: Allison and I had lunch in November? where she told me they were dating again... no word on if this is still the case, but it looked like it from where I was sitting.) Dallas always had a thought that even though we dated for like... ever? okay, if you add it all up like a year and a half... that one day you would run-into your old friend/ex in a Wal-mart and have nothing to say to them.

And as I sat in sacrament meeting I thought (in the middle of only boring testimonies) just how right he was. And I always thought I was right... How is it that someone goes from the most IMPORTANT person in your life to someone who you wish well, but is a casual acquaintance?

Unfortunately for all people put in the "I just broke-up with someone" boat, the only answer I've got right now is space. Lots of lots of space. And time. Two things I didn't bring with me on this voyage.

On the positive side, I'm taking about 1/2 the day off next Tuesday, saying "screw you, work and responsibilities" and going to Lagoon. It's the most exciting thing to have happen to me in weeks.
